Born in Niafounké on 31 October 1939, Malian guitarist and percussionist Ali Ibrahim “Farka” Touré — nicknamed the “African John Lee Hooker” — first learned traditional string instruments before turning to the guitar. Although he began his musical career in 1956, he achieved wider recognition much later, notably through his recordings with the British label World Circuit. After early work with the Troupe 117 and the national radio of Mali, he joined the Orchestre de Radio Mali and signed with the French label Sonafric, for which he recorded three albums. The first, released in 1976, already showcased his African-rooted blues style.
The 1978 album we are offering for sale is the third and final record he released with Sonafric.
