Seldom-seen second album by Lemchaheb, the influential Moroccan group founded in 1972 in Casablanca and known for their provocative, socially engaged lyrics denouncing the excesses of the political regime.
A major force in the renewal of Moroccan music from the 1970s through the 1980s, the band stood out for introducing modern electric instruments and embracing Western influences, while remaining deeply rooted in Berber and Gnawa traditions. Blending progressive Chaâbi, folk-rock energy, and psychedelic textures, they stand firmly in the lineage of legendary groups such as Nass El Ghiwane, Jil Jilala, and Tagada.
This second album perfectly captures that dynamic period. The title track, “El Jounoud,” unfolds as an extended Chaâbi journey, driven by hypnotic grooves, subtle studio effects, and a striking sitar solo that adds a trippy, almost spiritual dimension to the piece.
Following the death of Mohamed Sousdi in 2012, the group has continued under the direction of Mohamed Hamadi.
