Few would associate Belgium with the vibrant worlds of Latin music or Afro-funk, yet the country produced one of the genre’s most remarkable crossover records through the vision of Nico Gomez and his Afro Percussion Inc. project. Released during a decade driven by musical exploration, Ritual captures the adventurous spirit of the early 1970s with extraordinary flair, sounding just as compelling today as it did upon its release.
Before becoming known internationally as Nico Gomez, Joseph Van Het Groenewoud had already established himself within Europe’s Latin music scene. Alongside leading the Nico Gomez Orchestra, he also collaborated with The Chakachas, the influential Belgian collective celebrated for blending Latin rhythms with soul and funk influences.
First issued in 1971 by the Dutch label Omega International, Ritual unfolds over eleven expertly crafted compositions.
The album combines sharp arrangements, sophisticated percussion work, and tight ensemble playing into a sound that moves effortlessly between deep funk grooves, Afro-inspired jazz elements, and rich Latin textures. Every performance feels precise yet full of energy, reflecting the confidence of musicians completely in command of their craft.
Among the standout moments, “Lupita” remains an undeniable highlight — a track that has earned cult status among collectors, dancers, and DJs alike. Decades later, the album continues to resonate as a pioneering and highly influential recording. This reissue offers another opportunity to experience the intensity, warmth, and rhythmic power of a truly singular work.
