A cult Belgian jazz-funk title from 1972, Stream finds guitarist Philip Catherine exploring a more electric, groove-oriented side of jazz, with an excellent line-up featuring Belgian keyboardist Marc Moulin.
The album is particularly interesting for jazz-funk collectors thanks to three standout cuts: “Give It Up Or Turn It Loose”, a superb jazz-funk interpretation of the James Brown / J.B.’s classic; “Memphis Talk”, a deep, rhythm-driven funk workout with a distinctly early-’70s feel; and “Let’s Put It Like This”, a Moulin composition whose sound already hints at the cult fusion style he would develop with Placebo.
These tracks sit perfectly alongside the more jazz-oriented material, capturing the meeting point between sophisticated European jazz and the rawer groove language of early-’70s American funk.
A highly desirable record for Belgian jazz and European jazz-funk collectors.
