Rashied Ali Quintet is a landmark free jazz album led by drummer Rashied Ali, one of the key architects of the New York loft scene. Recorded in 1973 at Marzette Watts’s studio in New York City and released the same year on Ali’s Survival Records label, the album features an explosive quintet with Bob Ralston on tenor saxophone, Earl Cross on trumpet, James Blood Ulmer on guitar, and John Dana on bass.
A powerful early-1970s statement of intent, the record consists of two extended compositions: Ali’s “Address” and James Blood Ulmer’s “Theme For Captain Black.” The music is fierce, focused, and deeply interactive, channeling maximum intensity without ever slipping into unfocused excess. Marked by strong collective listening and raw energy, the album stands as a vital document of the loft-era aesthetic and a showcase for several under-recorded but essential musicians.
