Few records capture the elegance, sophistication and subtle melancholy of late-1960s Congolese rumba quite like Rochereau and the African Fiesta National’s Kashama Nkoy.
Released on the prestigious Ngoma label as J.5154, this 45 is part of the remarkable body of recordings made by Tabu Ley Rochereau and African Fiesta National “Le Peuple” around 1969. The A-side, Kashama Nkoy, is a classic Rochereau composition in Lingala, while the flip side features Mentiroso. The same recording of Kashama Nkoy was also included on the album L’Afrique Danse N°4 (African 360.004 / Ngoma J.33 002).
A beautiful and haunting piece of late-60s Congolese rumba—and one of those records where the music becomes even more fascinating once you discover the story behind it.
