One of the great cult records of 1970s Senegalese music, Géédy Dayaan captures Super Jamano de Dakar at a fascinating moment in the evolution of what would soon become the legendary Super Diamono sound.
Recorded at the Jandeer Night Club in Dakar, the album blends the hypnotic rhythmic drive of early mbalax with Afro-Cuban influences, psychedelic touches, electric guitar, organ and brass, creating a distinctly raw, dancefloor-oriented groove. The presence of Omar Pène on vocals adds another important connection to the history of Senegalese popular music.
The six tracks move between deep, hypnotic percussion, infectious Senegalese rhythms and beautifully loose psychedelic passages, with the extended title track “Geedy Dayaan” standing out as a particularly compelling example of the band's adventurous sound.
This copy is especially interesting as it features an alternative sleeve to the more commonly seen edition of Géédy Dayaan. Alternative Senegalese sleeves from this period are highly sought after by collectors, particularly when found in exceptional condition.
